Glossary · Also called Partner's salary
Partnership salary
An agreed amount credited to a partner who does more work, before the rest of the profit is split.
What it means
An appropriation of profit awarded to a partner for services, credited to that partner's current account rather than treated as a business expense.
Example
A working partner is allowed a RM12,000 salary before profit is shared in the agreed ratio.
Why it matters
It rewards unequal effort so an active partner is compensated beyond an equal profit share.
In practice
A partnership salary is an appropriation of profit. It is not a trading expense, so it never appears in the income statement. It is deducted in the appropriation account and credited to the receiving partner's current account. It recognises that one partner may do more of the day-to-day work. It is paid out before the remaining profit is divided in the profit-sharing ratio.
For instance, Aisha manages the shop full time and receives an agreed RM12,000, credited to her current account. Ben, who is less active, receives none. Only the profit left after this is split.
Take care not to confuse it with the wages of an ordinary employee. A shop assistant's pay is a real business cost, charged before net profit is found. A partnership salary only allocates profit the firm has already earned. If the firm makes a loss, the salary is still allocated, which can push a partner's share into a deficit.
