What this paper tests
Paper 1 draws only from Topics 1 to 3, so it tests the accounting environment, the recording system and the control processes. It is the larger paper at 100 marks and two thirds of the qualification, and it addresses all three assessment objectives. Its mix of multiple-choice, short and long answers means students need both quick recall and sustained working.
Content it draws on, with our guide to each part:
How our teachers prepare students for it
Our teachers use Section A as a warm-up and a scoring opportunity: ten multiple-choice marks and three five-mark short answers are 25 marks that reward precise definitions. We practise writing those short answers in a fixed shape of one idea, one reason and one example, because five marks is rarely more than that.
Section B is five 15-mark multi-part questions, so a student can expect to prepare ledgers, books of original entry, reconciliations and control accounts at length. The specification asks students to prepare documents such as a remittance advice and a petty cash voucher. That is a different skill from knowing what they are, so we practise setting them out.
A suggested time plan (our suggestion)
The board does not set a timetable inside the paper. As a starting point we hold back 10 minutes for checking, which leaves 110 of the 120 minutes for answering, or about 1.10 minutes for each mark. Adjust it to the student: if the multiple-choice and short answers come quickly, bank that time for the five 15-mark questions in Section B.
| Part of the paper | Marks | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|
| Section A: ten 1-mark multiple-choice questions | 10 | 11 minutes |
| Section A: three 5-mark short-answer questions | 15 | 17 minutes |
| Section B: five 15-mark multi-part questions | 75 | 83 minutes |
Computed from the duration and marks above. It is our own rule of thumb, not a board recommendation.
If your child makes these slips under timed conditions, a teacher can mark a timed attempt at this paper and show where the minutes and marks go. Book a trial class.
