What this paper tests
Paper 2 is called Financial Statements. It assesses content sections 3 to 5: the development of the accounting model, the preparation of financial statements, and interpretation, analysis and communication. Section 3 is shared with Paper 1, so the concepts and adjustments return here inside full statements and written commentary.
Content it draws on, with our guide to each part:
- Development of the accounting model
- Preparation of financial statements
- Interpretation, analysis and communication of financial information
How our teachers prepare students for it
Paper 2 is where a student sets out finished statements. Our teachers use the three Section B questions to cover the statement types, which the specification lists as sole traders, partnerships, internal limited company statements, manufacturers and clubs. A 20-mark question can call for a full statement, so we practise setting out a layout from memory.
The specification says some statements are for internal use and lists several exclusions, for example the statement of changes in equity and revaluation of non-current assets. We use those exclusions to focus revision.
For interpretation, the nine named measures and the separate OxfordAQA guide, Formulae for accounting ratios, are the study list. Students practise a calculation and then a sentence saying what the figure tells the owner.
A suggested time plan (our suggestion)
The board does not set a timetable inside the paper. As a starting point we hold back 10 minutes for checking, which leaves 95 of the 105 minutes for answering, or about 1.27 minutes for each mark. Adjust it to the student: someone who writes fast on layouts may need less time on the statements and more on the written commentary.
| Part of the paper | Marks | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|
| Section A: 10 multiple-choice questions on concepts and statements | 10 | 13 minutes |
| Section A: short answers on adjustments and ratios | 15 | 19 minutes |
| Section B: two 15-mark statement or interpretation tasks | 30 | 38 minutes |
| Section B: one 20-mark full statement or commentary | 20 | 25 minutes |
Computed from the duration and marks above. It is our own rule of thumb, not a board recommendation.
