Technology and sustainability

The 3 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.

What students must be able to do

  • Understand digital applications for all or part of the accounting records.
  • Understand the need to store data safely and sustainably, and the risks of not doing so.
  • Compare storage systems: manual, data storage devices, cloud and other digital services, with advantages and disadvantages.

How our teachers teach it

The syllabus asks for understanding of the types of storage and the trade-offs, not brand knowledge of software. Our teachers use a simple comparison frame of cost, access, security and environmental impact. Students can then write balanced advantages and disadvantages for any storage option the question gives.

Mini-example: where should a small shop keep its records?

A small shop is deciding between a paper ledger, a spreadsheet on one computer and an online service. A four-point frame, cost, access, security and environmental impact, organises a balanced answer.

Paper ledger: low cost and easy to start, but only one person can use it at a time. It can be lost to fire or damp, and it uses paper. Spreadsheet on one computer: quick calculations and easy copies, but the data is lost if the computer fails and no backup exists. Online service: access from anywhere and automatic backup, but it needs a connection and a subscription, and the owner relies on the provider's security.

Sustainability enters through storage choices too. Digital records cut paper use, though the servers behind online services use energy, and data kept far longer than needed adds to that use. A question about safe and sustainable storage rewards both the risk of losing data and the cost to the environment.

Remember the syllabus does not ask for the names of software packages. Describe the feature (automatic backup, shared access) and the trade-off.

If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on technology and sustainability line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.

New in the 2027 to 2029 syllabus

New in the 2027-2029 syllabus. The syllabus states that candidates do not need knowledge of, or access to, specific accounting software.

Where it is examined

Technology and sustainability can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.

Technology and sustainability: questions

Do students need to know accounting software?
No. The syllabus states candidates need no knowledge of specific software packages.
Does the 0985 (9 to 1) syllabus cover technology and sustainability too?
Yes. For examinations in 2027, 2028 and 2029 the 0985 subject content is word-for-word the same as 0452, so this sub-topic is identical on both. Only the reporting scale differs.
Which syllabus numbering should I use?
This sub-topic is numbered 7.3 in the syllabus for 2027 to 2029 and does not appear in the 2026 syllabus.
