Cambridge 0452 and 0985 · Topic 6
Analysis and interpretation
Calculating and commenting on ratios, comparing businesses and understanding who uses accounts.
About this topic
After preparing statements, students learn to read them. They calculate the ratios the syllabus names and say what the results mean. They compare years and businesses, explain who uses accounting information, and recognise what the numbers cannot tell you.
What students must be able to do
The official syllabus lists a set of skills under each sub-topic. Here is each one in plain English, with a link to our guide.
6.1 Calculation and understanding of accounting ratios
Work out each ratio in the syllabus list from figures in the accounts, with the correct unit.

Both papers are based on all the subject content, so this topic can appear in either. For 2027 to 2029, Paper 1 has 40 multiple-choice questions, all compulsory in 1 hour 30 minutes (40 marks). Paper 2 has five compulsory questions of 20 marks each, based on stimulus material in 1 hour 45 minutes (100 marks).
The question verbs matter too. The syllabus lists command words such as calculate, explain, prepare and evaluate, and the marks on each part of a question tell you how much detail is expected.
This section feeds the evaluation marks (AO3), which are available only in Paper 2. A correct ratio earns the calculation mark, but the comment, tied to the business in the question, earns the evaluation marks.

Slips our teachers see most in this topic
These come from marking student work in lessons, not from the board.
- Quoting a ratio result with no comment on what it means for this business.
- Using a formula other than the one printed in the syllabus appendix.
- Recommending a change without saying which ratio it would improve.
If these slips look familiar, a teacher can go through your child's answers on analysis and interpretation and fix the habit behind each one. Book a trial class.
What changed between the 2026 and 2027 to 2029 syllabuses
- Calculation and understanding of accounting ratios: The 2026 syllabus lists eight ratios: gross margin, profit margin, ROCE, current ratio, liquid ratio, rate of inventory turnover, and trade receivables and trade payables turnover in days. The 2027-2029 syllabus lists ten by adding mark-up and inventory turnover in days, and states the printed formulas are the only ones accepted in answers.
- Interpretation of accounting ratios: The 2027-2029 syllabus adds the reasons for the difference between cash and profit and widens improvement suggestions to include liquidity. The 2026 syllabus frames the gross and profit margin difference as an efficiency indicator.
- Inter-business comparison: Renamed from inter-firm comparison in 2026 to inter-business comparison in 2027-2029. The 2027-2029 wording focuses on factors that affect the ratios and the problems of comparison.
- Interested parties: The 2026 list names owners, managers, trade payables, banks, investors, club members and others such as governments and tax authorities. The 2027-2029 list names employees, suppliers and customers separately and adds public and environmental bodies.
- Limitations of accounting statements: The 2026 syllabus lists historic cost, difficulties of definition and non-financial aspects. The 2027-2029 syllabus replaces difficulties of definition with the application of accounting policies and gives examples of non-financial factors.
