Cambridge 0452 and 0985 · Sub-topic 5.6
Incomplete records
The 4 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.
What students must be able to do
- Explain why and how businesses keep less than a full set of records, and the disadvantages.
- Prepare opening and closing statements of affairs and find profit from changes in capital.
- Calculate sales, purchases, gross profit, receivables, payables and other missing figures.
- Use mark-up, margin and inventory turnover to find missing figures.

How our teachers teach it
These questions are detective work: some numbers are missing and the student must rebuild them from the ones that exist. Our teachers teach a toolkit of reconstruction accounts, such as a cash summary and total receivables and payables accounts, plus a margin or mark-up check. The key habit is to work out what the question is really asking for before building anything.
If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on incomplete records line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.
How the wording changed for 2027
Both syllabuses limit incomplete records questions to sole traders. The 2027-2029 syllabus adds why businesses keep different kinds of records and states service and manufacturing businesses are not asked.
Where it is examined
Incomplete records can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.
