The fundamentals of accounting

Why businesses keep accounts at all, and the one equation every later topic rests on.

About this topic

This opening section answers the question every new student asks: what is accounting for? It separates book-keeping (recording) from accounting (reporting and interpreting), explains why owners measure profit and loss, and introduces assets, liabilities and owner's equity through the accounting equation. It is short, but every later topic quietly relies on it.

What students must be able to do

The official syllabus lists a set of skills under each sub-topic. Here is each one in plain English, with a link to our guide.

How it is examined

Both papers are based on all the subject content, so this topic can appear in either. For 2027 to 2029, Paper 1 has 40 multiple-choice questions, all compulsory in 1 hour 30 minutes (40 marks). Paper 2 has five compulsory questions of 20 marks each, based on stimulus material in 1 hour 45 minutes (100 marks).

The question verbs matter too. The syllabus lists command words such as calculate, explain, prepare and evaluate, and the marks on each part of a question tell you how much detail is expected.

Both papers are based on all the syllabus content, so these ideas can appear anywhere. The accounting equation is also a handy checking tool inside larger questions, for example when a statement of financial position will not balance.

Slips our teachers see most in this topic

These come from marking student work in lessons, not from the board.

  • Treating owner's equity as cash the business holds, rather than as the owner's claim on the net assets.
  • Mixing up what increases or decreases the equation when a transaction involves both an asset and a liability.
  • Describing accounting as "keeping records" only, and missing the information-for-decisions purpose that examiners look for.

If these slips look familiar, a teacher can go through your child's answers on the fundamentals of accounting and fix the habit behind each one. Book a trial class.

The fundamentals of accounting: questions

Which paper tests the fundamentals of accounting?
Both papers are based on all the subject content, so this topic can appear in either. For 2027 to 2029, Paper 1 has 40 multiple-choice questions, all compulsory in 1 hour 30 minutes (40 marks). Paper 2 has five compulsory questions of 20 marks each, based on stimulus material in 1 hour 45 minutes (100 marks).
Did this topic change for 2027?
The wording of this topic is essentially the same in the 2026 and the 2027 to 2029 syllabuses.
Is this the same for 0985?
Yes. For 2027 to 2029 the Cambridge 0985 subject content is word-for-word the same as 0452. Only the grade scale differs.
Is this topic worth revising properly?
Yes. It is short, it is mostly definitions, and the same ideas return when students comment on results in section 6, so a clear understanding here pays off later.
