Business documents

The 4 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.

What students must be able to do

  • Recognise the invoice, debit note, credit note, statement of account, receipt, cheque counterfoil, paying-in slip and bank statement.
  • Explain how each document is a source of accounting information.
  • From 2027: understand documents produced and recorded manually or digitally.
  • Under 2026: complete pro-forma business documents.

Official wording: Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452: syllabus for 2027-2029 (Version 1), page 12; Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452: syllabus for examination in 2026 (Version 2, December 2025), page 12. See all sources.

How our teachers teach it

Documents are the evidence behind every entry. Our teachers have students trace one credit sale from invoice to sales journal to ledger to statement of account. Each document is then understood as a stage in a story rather than a form to memorise. That makes the Paper 1 matching questions much faster.

If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on business documents line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.

How the wording changed for 2027

The 2027-2029 syllabus frames documents as produced and recorded manually or digitally. It drops the separate objective to complete pro-forma documents that appears in 2026.

Where it is examined

Business documents can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.

Other sub-topics in topic 2

Business documents: questions

Which documents lead to which book of prime entry?
Our teachers map them as a chain: invoices to the sales or purchases journal, credit notes to the returns journals, cheques and receipts to the cash book. We practise it until it is automatic.
Does the 0985 (9 to 1) syllabus cover business documents too?
Yes. For examinations in 2027, 2028 and 2029 the 0985 subject content is word-for-word the same as 0452, so this sub-topic is identical on both. Only the reporting scale differs.
Which syllabus numbering should I use?
It is numbered 2.2 in both syllabuses: page 12 of the 2027 to 2029 syllabus and page 12 of the 2026 syllabus.
